Lunch study

As I was getting started on this, a non-dev non-artist tour group walked by my desk.  I had fun imagining what must have been going through their mind when they saw the ref photo of half-naked dude on my screen.

Big Game Hunter (linework)

+1 to my robotics study:

Elf vs Orc

Very random lunch sketch.

Plus a couple of gundam sketches, copied from pictures I found online.

Must restart filling sketch books.

Helm

She held the helm with silent reverence, and sighed with the weight of the world.

Hell Beast

Just got an awesome presentation from one of my most favorite artists: Laurel D Austin.

Notes:

  • Use silhouette of something to subtly add the flavor of it to your design.  (Example: pirate sleeves to add flair)
  • When doing character concept art, it's good to think about giving modelers different texture/specularities to play with.  (example: zipper/buckle on matte materials)
  • Use sub-surface scattering to express transparency.  (Example: crab reference photo)
  • Due to the fantasy nature of imaginary creatures, it is important to make them feel more real by nailing down the gesture and personality.
Sketch process:

1. gesture/personality
2. anatomy/basic hint of lighting
3. add color by using an multiply layer, essentially using the color layer as a mask to block in more basic colors
4. paint over more details

Black Sheep

Tonight's doodle.  Spent a rather stressful day trying to stay focused, but maybe I should have just took a doodle break instead.

The Fat Phoenix

I began doodling a badass phoenix, and changed my mind.  Somewhere between 1 and 2 hours.

PSA: Fire is very high in calories.

Gamescom paintings

In the rush to try and copy my files before the light went back on again, I screwed up and did not grab the correct folder off the computer on stage >_<

Here are 2 of my practice runs, 2 hours each on top of pre-drawn clean line drawings.  They probably look better than the real thing because it was a lot more relaxing drawing at home, without having to answer questions :)

It was very challenging, and I hope I didn't botch too many questions.  A lot of fun though, and it's unbelievable I got to do something this cool.  It's one of the most awesome experiences in my life.

Here's the witchdoctor from live stage which happened to be saved in the correct folder.  It's at the end of the one-hour mark, grayscale.

Gamescom!

I'll be drawing live at Gamescom from Thursday to Sunday at Blizz stage.  The schedule is 12pm-1pm everyday except for Friday (4pm-5pm).  Looking forward to seeing the biggest game convention in the world!

Amazon - Take 2

Beginning to think that instead of rushing a half-assed, 1-hour painting, maybe I really should try to do something cleaner and nicer in 2 hours.  Hour 1 can be linework + flat colors, while hour 2 is painting.  Much happier with this version, even though now I see that her left shoulderpad is problematic.

Amazon

Speed paint.  Her pose turned out to be kinda stiff!  Ugh.

1 hour.

Edit: got some feedback and fixed the wonkiness a bit in her face.  Gotta remember to flip canvas!

Sorcerer

Lunch doodle of the day.

Sketch night

Monday sketch night.  Random doodle and perspective is really wonky... there's no free transform when drawing on real paper :P

Fighting robots

This week'll be robot week, to remedy how I normally don't draw robots.  At some point I hope to force myself into doing a car week... but right now I don't have that kind of willpower :P

Also trying a new way of painting.  For this one I started out in black and used the black layer as a mask to lay in early colors.  It was an interesting experiment.

Lunch doodle

30 minutes lunch doodle.

Lanthian Priest Colored

Could not resist coloring this guy.

Holy priest of light. Part of his duty is to patrol around his temple at night to bring light and peace. The blade he holds is ceremonial, a ward against the evils in the shadow.

Lanthian Priest

A true believer in light, the high priest almost starves himself to purify his spirit.

The King

To balance out all the line drawings, here's a quick (30 minute ish) lunch value sketch.

New card

My best card to-date.  The process was surprisingly smooth and there were almost no changes from sketch to color.

Haven't managed to beat this one in any of my newer cards yet, but hopefully my next one will be better :)

Sett Archer sketch

Same universe, different culture.  I'm not quite sure where this one's going to go yet.  Hopefully I'll figure things out at some point.

Astra Trader Sketch

I loved writing fantasy stories in high school, and some of the stories evolved to hint at a larger fantasy world.  I hope to make a game out of this world at some point, but I thought I should begin doing sketches now rather than waiting for myself to learn scripting... which in theory would happen once I feel happy about my art skills... which may never actually happen :P

The world's populated by humans of different racial and cultural groups, rather than high fantasy humanoid races like elves or dwarves.  The people of Astra is kind of like real-life Gypsies.  They roam about solo or in groups as traders, seers, or mercenaries.  There are no known Astra settlements or kingdoms on any map. Adding to the mystery and taboo is their ability to work strange, voodoo-like spells that do not belong in any officially recognized school of magic.
