kekai brushes

Thanks to Jeff, I am now a proud owner of Kekai brushes :)  I've always been a huge fan of Kekai, and hopefully with his photoshop brushes I can steal a little bit of the liveliness that's present in all of his paintings.

Quick lunch study of... another face, heheh.  I changed her expression up subtly from the original photo.

Moar face

This is more of a mark-making practice.  I'm getting pretty tired of the precise manner default round brushes work, so I'm trying something else.  Wanted to keep the brush strokes large but I'm having a hard time stopping myself from going into smaller brushes... was fun though.

Used photoshop default chalk brush with opacity - pen pressure.

Face Study 2

Had more trouble with this one, probably due to the shot being straight-on.  The skintone is also trickier.

At one point I could draw nothing other than faces, and I vowed to steer my focus away from them.  However, I think now it's time for me to get back onto the obvious focal point of the image again, and maybe actually try to learn some stereotype faces.

I think my sense of beauty differs from many guys I know, which is kind of unfortunate - but hopefully the faces I like best are still seen as somewhat pretty in the minds of general public.

Starting a new contest piece of Shwann's character (http://shwann.deviantart.com/art/Lord-Remix-160001154).  I guess I'm a sucker for big robotic arms.

Planning to use this piece to learn to paint skin tones, but I'm already veering off in the simplified cartoony direction, so who knows...

Pretty rough color/light studies.  Don't like how the face is coming along, so I did some facial studies afterward.  Men's faces are hard... actually men are harder to draw for me in general.  Need to look up some anatomy reference for his pose later as well.

This is as far as I can take this piece before hitting the sack tonight + hopping on 7am flight tomorrow.  Not finished, but learned things, and had fun :)  I guess that's what matters most at this point.

Still needing a final painting pass... I have never managed to make anything look decent by just doing grayscale + color overlay.  I wonder if that's weird.

Heaven vs. Hell WIP

Early wip for CGHUB sketch jam: Heaven vs. Hell.  Didn't try to do anything new idea-wise.  Rather, the focus is composition, readability, and overall energy.

The raw, 30-minute sketch below has a lot of energy.  Hoping to not lose too much of it as I go on, heheh.

Finally catching up with scanning

It's been a while since I last scanned my sketches...  Well, it may look like I've been busy, but I've really been pretty lazy.  Gotta get back in gear.

While scanning the Saturday animator's life drawing session sketches, I realized that the sequential, 30-second gestures look pretty cool when put in... well, sequential order.  Go figure.

Mystic Gunslinger - sketch

Trying to get back into doing forum topics.  This week's Character of the Week theme at conceptart.org is apparently "Mystic Gunslinger".  Focusing on the pose right now, trying to apply the really great lecture by Steven Huston earlier today.  Looking forward to the oil paint workshop tomorrow.

Moar life painting

One 30 minute pose and a bunch of 5-min scribbles, from Laguna College of Art and Design.  Half of the session were 30 second and 1 minute poses and it was a lot of fun.

I will scan in the pencil gestures at some point... heheh...
